As the temperatures rise and the days get longer, boaters eagerly prepare for another season on the water here at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina. But before you set sail, it’s essential to ensure that safety remains a top priority. That’s where National Safe Boating Week comes in! National Safe Boating Week is May 18-24, reminding boaters of the importance of boating safety skills and preparedness.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable time on the water, the National Safe Boating Council offers these essential tips for boaters:

  • Wear a life jacket. No matter what activity you have planned on the water, always remember to wear a life jacket every time you are on the water. Accidents on the water can happen much too fast to reach and put on a stowed life jacket.
  • Take a boating safety course: Gain valuable knowledge and experience through a boating safety course tailored to all skill levels.
  • Make a float plan & keep in touch: Inform someone onshore of your trip itinerary, including boat and passenger details, and carry multiple communication devices that work when wet in case of emergencies.
  • Use an engine cut-off switch: Employ this safety device to stop the engine in case of an operator overboard situation.
  • Watch the weather: Stay informed of weather conditions before and during your boating excursion.
  • Stay attentive & know your surroundings: Be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions while operating a boat.
  • Avoid boating under the influence: Designate a sober skipper to ensure safe navigation.
